Week 11, Storytelling, Birds of Immortal Feathers, Portfolio

Yggdrasil and Merlin found on hrefngast.deviantart.com

Now under the heavy curse of Melusina, Nathan had embarked on the first step to free her and her sister, Melior, from their imprisonment in the Fae Realm on the estate of Count Raymond of Toulouse. Only the sword of their grandmother, Nineve, the Lady of the Lake could lift the curse laid upon them by the jealous Morgan LeFay. Nathan was the perfect fool for Melusina to use.  Morgan LeFay, spiteful sprite that she is, had put a curse on the sisters when they attended a festival on the property in the Middle Ages.

Morgan had done this in order to avoid competing for attention of a man, Accolon, and she cursed Melusina and Melior in a jealous fit. Accolon being a  bit of a rogue made a jealous Morgan quite unpredictable. The two girls got stuck in a faery realm that no one else had been able to see or perceive for almost 800 years, except for the pure of heart, Nathan the Seeker and his brother Daniel who also had become trapped there.

Melusina's problem was that she and her sister were trapped. It's was a complicated situation. The only person who could fix the problem was Merlin. The girls needed Merlin to revoke the fairy spell that Morgan LeFay had cast that kept them trapped. The problem for Merlin wass that he also had been trapped and was sleeping in a magical tree,Yggdrasil, in a magical cave in Avignon, France. He was put there by none other than Nineve, Melusina's grandmother. Nathan would need the magic of the talisman that is Excalibur to wake up Merlin, who is sleeping in the tree Yggdrasil the world tree. The sword Excalibur belongs to Nineve, so Nathan had to go get it for Melusina's plan to work.

Melusina  had seductively given Nathan her list of plans. "I know you will want to get married right away, so I will need you to do this. Wonderland is the most romantic place for a honeymoon. Once you have found Grandma Nineve's stargate you can go in. It's always unlocked there. Her home will most likely be under a spell, but no worries, love! Get the sword Excalibur, which she keeps on the wall above the fireplace. Here are the symbols to the stargate portal to get to the magical dimension where Merlin will be sleeping. Once he is awake bring him here through the portal with these symbols. He will break the faery spell keeping me prisoner. Then he can surely marry us as repayment for waking him from Grandma Nineve's nasty spell."

Nathan  had lovingly agreed to go on her quest and set out on the journey. Nathan first traveled by horse to Avignon from Toulouse. Nathan's only driving force was thinking about his love for the beautiful Melusina, and how to retrieve the sword from Nineve, the Lady of the Lake. He had almost four days ride to think about these tasks. Luckily for him, being a Seeker came in handy and fate would bring him an opportunity for more adventure!

Scattach the Shadow had also found herself  on adventure and was out looking for some elven cattle for a nice snack. They make the best butter and cheese. Scattach met up with Nathan as he was reaching the lake where Nineve dwells. Nineve was often here in the winter but not the summer. Thankfully she is not always home, which was exactly what Melusina was counting on when she sent Nathan to get the sword during the summer month of June. In his excitement he spooked the herd of elven cattle and angered Scattach.

"What the heck do you think you are doing?" accused Scattach in her angriest voice she could muster.

"I am on a quest for my true love. I have come seeking something. Forgive me and my rude manners please," Nathan calmly and politely offered.

"Hmm. Sounds fun," Scattach replied. She was busy sizing the man up to decide if she was going to attack him or keep talking to him. He seemed intriguing enough. Scattach is known as The Shadow. She is the greatest warrior of all time. She is an Immortal from the times of Atlantis. She is called The Shadow because she moves so fast. She is six foot tall and has fiery red hair.

Nathan being a man of few words walked to the edge of the calm waters of the lake and just stepped right in. Scattach followed him curious at what this guy was doing. They walked into a stargate portal that took them to Nineve's home. The portal was a thin fluid-like opaque veil that on the other side was a cave of quartz crystal illuminating from within itself. Nineve lives beyond the cave of quartz and in an amazing world where gods and goddesses dwell. A gorgeous city of light!

Scattach opened the locked entry. They entered the magical abode of the Lady of the Lake and stole the legendary sword Excalibur. Once they had the sword, they went to find Merlin.  When the two of them arrived at the cave entrance they looked around. Scattach the Shadow was on high alert knowing that they were walking into a serious situation. What a strange day!

Nathan called out, "Merlin! Wake up! It is time to go!" The sword Excalibur was glowing inside its gem-encrusted sheath and casts colorful lights all across the cave.

Inside this enormous cave is the world tree, Yggdrasil, and sitting on its limbs were all types of birds.
Morrigan the Crow was there, next to Merlin the Falcon and Freya the Hawk, and Thoth the Ibis. All of them were asleep and put here by Nineve. All of the birds in the tree became awakened and began to transform to their human body form.

Nathan took the opportunity to grab Merlin and get back to the stargate portal to Melusina! Nathan wass not really thinking about how things would change now that he had awakened a tree full of Immortal Birds! He wass just thinking about heading to Wonderland for his honeymoon. O frabjous day, calooh calay!

Bibliography-This story is part of the King Arthur unit. Story source: King Arthur: Tales of the Round Table by Andrew Lang and illustrated by H. J. Ford (1902).
This story is part of the Welsh Fairy Tales unit. Story source: The Welsh Fairy Book by W. Jenkyn Thomas with illustrations by Willy Pogány (1908).
Author's Note- This story is an adaptation of the story when Nimue/Nineve, the Lady of the Lake, puts Merlin to sleep in under a rock. Some of the legends say he is in a cave, some say he is in a tree. In either case he is asleep and not dead. I am choosing to tell the story about what happens when Merlin wakes up for yet another adventure!

I also added the half unit story that I read this week called The Stray Cow that is part of the Welsh Fairy Tales Unit. These stories have helped me to pull together the continuing adventures of Nathan the Seeker. The story of the Stray Cow is fun. The Lady of the Lake has cattle and one of them falls in love with a farmer's cows. People don't usually get to see the cows, but this lucky farmer steals one and is blessed with prosperity because of the lucky cow. When the farmer decides it is time to butcher the magical cow the Lady of the Lake shows up to get the magical cow and the farmer loses his wealth.

The part that I used from The Passing of Merlin  is where the Lady of the Lake emerges from the Lake and Merlin falls in love with her to his own undoing, much like how Nathan falls for Melusina. Also, I focused on the place to find Merlin where Nineve put him so we could wake Merlin up. In the story of The Stray Cow I brought in the Lady of the Lakes cattle which had attracted the attention of another Immortal, Scattach the Shadow. She helps Nathan to get the sword Caliburn (Excalibur) and joins in the story.

Portfolio

Welcome to the Portfolio Page of the Fallen Master.

For this portfolio project I am including the stories that I am having the most fun with reading and writing. The styles and stories are varied, just like a bag of Skittles candy. The main character is a man named Nathan who leads a magical life, he is a seeker. Nathan's journeys across time will take us to some interesting places and we will meet some whimsical people. Some, like Nathan's wife, Melusina, are immortals but Nathan does not realize it until it is too late. Will Nathan manage to pass the initiation with some magical intervention or will he like so many others fade into obscurity a nameless and forgotten Seeker, looking for the secret to life immortal?

The Fall of Atlantis
Before the time of the Great Flood, was the time of Atlantis when rebelling humans built the Tower of Babel to start a war with the heavens.

Week 15, Reading

Reading

In this course my favorite readings were the ones in the beginning that were the classics that I had not had the chance to read before. I also really liked the last few weeks of the reading choices, the European and British units. I had read some of those before, but not all of them.

For the reading diaries, I liked to copy and paste the parts that really caught my attention in the original story. Sometimes I wanted to use bits of the exact story, or I just used the key ideas for the story. I tried to write it like it was a diary that no one else was reading but me. I tried to capture my inspiration at the moment from reading the story. It was easier to do on the readings that I liked the most.

I found that doing the readings was easy to keep up with, but it took more time and efforts to do all the writing for the class. Even the comments. I would usually take one day a week to be able to do the weeks assignments. I don't know if it was just a lot of writing for me because I was trying to do it all in one day or if it's just my perception.

I like that the readings are varied and you can choose from many things to read for the week. I would recommend to future students to take advantage of the assignment in the beginning where you have us map out what we want to read. I think having a goal and checking yourself is helpful. I forgot a few weeks into the course that I had created a roadmap for myself. It was good that midway you made us do another one. I tried to stay closer to that list and found it was helpful.

Week 15, Reflections

Reflections

I cannot believe how fast this semester went. I am relieved it is coming to an end and yet sorta sad to see it all go. I had a great time in this class. I felt like a kid in a candy store without a budget. Being able to read such great literature, which is inspiring and always makes me want to write, and then getting a chance to retell the story however I choose. I learned a lot about language and grammar from making endless mistakes. I love that even though I must have been driving the instructor insane with making the same mistakes over and over, she cheerfully urged me on to fix the problems and keep going. I think this helped me greatly even in my other courses. A few weeks ago I had a ten page paper due in all of  my other classes. When I had to set down to write them I was hyper aware of where my problems are and I double checked on them, and had the links to look it up because of this course. What a blessing!

I love to read and write, but I had not really been doing much of it until this class. It forced me to get back into things that I enjoy. I had so much fun reading everyone's stories. I think what I did the best at in this class was letting my imagination run wild. I like the stories I wrote, but I feel like they are the readers digest version of what they should be. I hope that I can take the time to take the stories to the next level. I did sign up to take the Indian Epics course next semester and I look forward to working hard to doing a better job with the things I struggle with in this course. Life is such a work in progress.

Week 12, Storytelling, The Honeymoon in Wonderland

Found on blog.hwtm.com
 The Honeymoon in Wonderland

Merlin officiated the nuptial vows and no sooner had he done so than Nineve, Lady of the Lake, showed up with Scattach the Shadow through the portal. Daniel, Nathan's brother and Melior, Melusina's sister were also present at the impromptu wedding ceremony as well as many other Immortals, Gods and Goddesses and all types of magical beings  who kept arriving through the stargate portal during their ceremony. News travels fast in the world of magic. The stargate portal is a magical way to travel through time and space dimensions. Often it appears to non magical beings to look like a pond or sacred well. Water has a magical transitive ability to shift energies if given the correct symbols used to direct the travel.

Merlin is still under the spell of Nineve, even though more than a millenia has passed, he shows no anger towards her. Nineve, on the other hand, was quite taken aback by the strange gathering. "Quite the dramatic show old friend!", Nineve sneered at Merlin. Nineve a glorious River Goddess dressed in her shimmering gauzy gown glaring haughtily at Merlin dressed in his shiny robes of a similar fashion. She is already plotting her next move to outsmart her old wizard friend.

Nineve had been in the middle of taking her vacation in Mount Shasta, California when her magical alarms went off alerting her to when Nathan the Seeker and Scattach the Shadow stole her sword Excalibur and then used it to unleashed Merlin and other Immortals from magical sleep. Thanks to Demeter many of the Immortals have a shape shifting ability to shift into bird form from when they all helped to look for her missing daughter Persephone. Nineve used the magic spell of placing the Immortals into the magical world tree, Yggdrasil, into a magical sleep while in their bird forms. The clever woman that she is learned all these cunning skills from the great Merlin himself! With all those powerful being tucked away all this time Nineve enjoyed ruling the magical realms without their interference. Alas all good things must come to an end.

The White Rabbit carrying his pocket watch and in a loud and hurried voice shouted, "Melusina and Nathan please let us go now, we don't want to be late! Oh dear!".

The whole wedding party followed the White Rabbit and the newlyweds right down the rabbit hole into Wonderland!"You are the most beautiful wife in all of Wonderland my dear Melusina!", croons Nathan. He feels just awestruck to be married to the Immortal Melusina. The courtship and the wedding both are a bit odd but there you have it.

"Who are YOU?" said the Caterpillar as he took the hookah out of its mouth and addressed them in a languid, sleepy voice.

Laughing, Nathan replied, rather shyly, "I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then."

Just then Nathan saw the Cheshire Cat and kindly asked, "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,"said the Cat. The Cheshire Cat giggled and started singing..."twas brillig and the slithy toves..."

The wedding party all gathered together at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and carry on for who knows how long, because time works so differently in Wonderland...

Author's Note: I chose to write this fun little story based on one of my all time literary favorites, Alice in Wonderland. I love the imagination and whimsy of the stories of the girl Alice who most likely falls asleep and has some strange dreams, but in the story goes to a world of magic. She talks to a Hookah Smoking Caterpillar, a Cheshire Cat and a Mad Hatter in her travels among many other colorful characters. Nothing is as it seems in that world.

I also have been trying to carry a theme throughout the stories in my portfolio for this class. The story is about a man named Nathan who is a Seeker of Wisdom and Knowledge. He is pure of heart and fate brings him  magical opportunities and larger than life adventures with powerful people. Nathan's story is a long journey that is only represented here in the Portfolio in small fragments. As he travels the world through time and space he will face many strange things that may sound familiar to you from other things you have read or heard.

Week 14, Reading Diary, Reading Diary A,Myth-Folklore Unit: Italian Popular Tales

Myth-Folklore Unit: Italian Popular Tales
The Story of Crivoliu
www.dailymail.co.uk

So this story touched me a bit. First off, it reminded me a little of the biblical story of Moses. Then when the abandoned baby grows up to be a holy man and finally a Pope I was surprised. The story starts out so strangely, with a brother and sister incest taboo, then abandoning a baby after branding it. A fisherman finds the baby. This also seems a reference to the Christian fish symbol to me.

This was such a strange unit as a whole. This half of the unit is really not what I expected. The last story where the Cock wanted to be the Pope. I had to look up how many Popes there had been. I thought, well of course there would be literature focused on being a Pope in Italy!  The story of the three goslings and the wolf! Whoa, I guess we know where the three little pigs and the wolf come from! They must be related. One of the stories was like the farmer in the dell. The other one was surely an inspiration for Dr. Suess. I had fun reading this last unit of stories!

Week 14, Reading Diary, Reading Diary B, Myth-Folklore Unit: Italian Popular Tales

www.etsy.com

This is such a neat story. The gist is that a woman who was stupid enough to steal from a witch got caught and promised her unborn child to the witch! The girl goes to live with the witch who raises her. The witch keeps the girl locked in the tower. This is the story known to us all as Rapunzel. I am currently learning a great deal about the medieval times and it is interesting to me how this girl gets locked in this tower by a woman called a witch. I am glad that it does have a happy ending though it is sad that the witch is most likely just a country woman who was unmarried or barren and loses what she cherished most, the young girl. The maiden to me represents teen angst and the strange ideas of love during this time to rescue a damsel, or a strange girl you find in the woods. These stories are so old, there are many kings in the land, so this is most interesting to me.

Week 13, Reading Diary, Reading Diary B, Myth-Folklore Unit: Dante's Inferno

Myth-Folklore Unit: Dante's Inferno
I did not really find a particular story that jumped out at me. It was fun to understand a lot of the references in the stories. I think I am also feeling ripped off that though the people are mentioned that are in all the different circle of hell, he does not give enough description of the people and how their punishment is appropriate for their crimes. I am shocked at where he places certain people. It is obvious to me that Dante clearly hates the Romans that he places in the worst hell where Satan is. I think most of the other people mentioned in the story are really kinda funny. Like Nimrod whose language is foreign to all. Fall of the Tower of Babel/Atlantis....

Overall I enjoyed reading the parts of Inferno here. I will most likely continue to read more of it later, outside of this class.

Week 13, Reading Diary, Reading Diary A, Myth-Folklore Unit: Dante's Inferno

www.reddit.com
Inferno: The Furies and the Heretics

I really enjoyed reading this unit. I had not read it before, I have heard about it of course because it is so very famous and influential in religious ideas. People had told me that trying to read it would be difficult and you can't understand nor appreciate the work unless you know the people that he meets in the different circles of hell. Admittedly, I did not recognize all the names, but I did know most of the people so far. I like how at the end of this snippit, Dante see's the graves of the heretics...
...'Here are the arch-heretics, with their followers, of every sect: and the tombs contain many more than you might think. Here like is buried with like, and the monuments differ in degrees of heat.' ...
I can only imagine the list of people who might have been thought heretics at this time. Lest we forget that even Jesus was condemned a heretic...
You do not demand to know who these spirits are that you see. I want you to learn, before you go further, that they had no sin, yet, though they have worth, it is not sufficient, because they were not baptised, and baptism is the gateway to the faith that you believe in. Since they lived before Christianity, they did not worship God correctly, and I myself am one of them. For this defect, and for no other fault, we are lost, and we are only tormented, in that without hope we live in desire.'
I like this part of the story too, where it talks about how these people are down here not because of sin, but because they were not baptized. Some people are down here because it wa before the time of Christianity. This one really gets me. I find it hilarious and I am sure Dante did too, because the early church fathers who basically invented the religion as an amalgamation of all different religions and ideas had not really critically examined the issues that heaven and hell bring to the picture.

Week 14, Extra Reading Diary, Myth-Folklore Unit: The Heptameron of Margaret, Queen of Navarre

Myth-Folklore Unit: The Heptameron of Margaret, Queen of Navarre
www.todocoleccion.net
I don't know what to say! I loved this unit so much! I had first heard of the Decameron a year ago in a medieval Italy class that I took and was interested. I think I had also heard of the Heptameron at the same time. This semester I am taking a class called medieval women and it is a big topic for women of that time who were wealthy and educated to commission literature, especially in France. So this was my first chance I have had in the past year to actually read it, not just read about it. I want to read more of course! The style that it is written in appeals to me. Using the story and then using the dialogue in the group about the story. It has such a natural flow to it. I have to read so much historical information that I have almost believed that it is all boring. It is refreshing to run across a historical piece that I enjoy. I am glad it is not full of too much religion or courtly love, because that would be typical of the time and drive me nuts.

If I can I want to use the writing style that this half unit is written in, rather than any one passage of this unit. I have yet to read the reading diaries a and b for this week, so I may choose to write my story on this unit this week.

Week 13, Extra Reading Diary,Myth-Folklore Unit: Europa's Fairy Book

Week 13, Extra Reading Diary,Myth-Folklore Unit: Europa's Fairy Book

This half unit that I read (B) was so much fun! I loved all the stories, but I had read all of them before except for this one. How fun this turns out. It's so cute that the women is deaf and misunderstands Paris for Paradise and gives the stranger all that stuff, and the best is when they take the door with them so no one will break into their home. I thought I was watching an episode of Benny Hill! I like the happy ending. Very cute story. The sky is falling bit ! Too funny! I don't think I will be able to use anything from this for a story but who knows, this one is so fun!

Week 12, Extra Reading Diary,Myth-Folklore Unit: More Celtic Fairy Tales

Myth-Folklore Unit: More Celtic Fairy Tales

The Fate of the Children of Lir
...so she drove the children of Lir into the lake to bathe, and they did as Oifa told them....
As soon as they were upon the lake, she struck them with a Druid's wand of spells and wizardry and put them into the forms of four beautiful, perfectly white swans, and she sang this song over them...

I like this story the best out of the half unit that I read. It actually reminds me of a song I love so much by Loreena McKennitt called Bonny Swans. It is a bit different in that the  story is about a group of sisters instead of a wicked step mother. I wonder if this is where the author found the inspiration for this song! I enjoyed this story more than that of the McAndrews. I could not find anything to identify with on that half of this half unit!
I love the motif of the lake. Water plays such a magical role in so many stories. The birds plays such magical roles as well. I love the shape shifting myths that find their way into so many different world myths as well.

Week 12, Reading Diary B, Myth-Folklore Unit: Alice in Wonderland

boingboing.net

'Have some wine,' the March Hare said in an encouraging tone.

Alice looked all round the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. 'I don't see any wine,' she remarked.

'There isn't any,' said the March Hare.

'Then it wasn't very civil of you to offer it,' said Alice angrily.

'It wasn't very civil of you to sit down without being invited,' said the March Hare.

I think we should have to change this up a bit. But I like how the March Hare (Ostara) is full of witty quips. I think we will keep this going! The mad hatter also asks Alice to solve a riddle...this must be something we will keep too. It should be Melusina who has to solve the riddle.

Week 12, Reading Diary A, Myth-Folklore Unit: Alice in Wonderland

Found on blog.hwtm.com

'Cheshire Puss,' she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. 'Come, it's pleased so far,' thought Alice, and she went on. 'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.

'I don't much care where — ' said Alice.

'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

' — so long as I get SOMEWHERE,' Alice added as an explanation.

'Oh, you're sure to do that,' said the Cat, 'if you only walk long enough.'

Alice felt that this could not be denied, so she tried another question. 'What sort of people live about here?'

'In THAT direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, 'lives a Hatter: and in THAT direction,' waving the other paw, 'lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'

'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.

'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'

'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.

'You must be,' said the Cat, 'or you wouldn't have come here.'

Alice didn't think that proved it at all; however, she went on, 'And how do you know that you're mad?'

This has always been a favorite part of the story for me. If you don't know who you are when the hooka smoking caterpiller asks you, and you don't know where you are going then it's perfectly acceptable to be going to have a tea party with the mad hatter. To be among the mad. I am excited about adding this part of the story to my story. I think when Nathan and Melusina go to Wonderland for their anniversary they will meet the Chesire cat and the hooka smoking caterpiller.

The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

'Who are YOU?' said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, 'I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'
I think if we get to have the caterpillar meet with Nathan and Melusina and get them to say aloud who they are it might be fun. They are on their honeymoon so they can say fun things like, I am married! I am ....a seeker....I am....etc.

I want this piece of the story to kind of wrap of my portfolio stories. The first story has to start in the fall of Atlantis, and the last part of the story is when Nathan is seeking the Emerald tablets. Wonderland is where Nathan and Melusina go after they wake up Merlin and Melusina is set free, so Nathan and Melusina get married and they head to Wonderland for a honeymoon.

Aphrodite (Goddesss of love, beauty and marriage) can maybe play a part in the story too. She is represented by a white rabbit. I think instead of a man white rabbit, I will use a woman, Aphrodite who shape shifts into a rabbit. She is the person waiting to take the newly wedded couple to Wonderland. (and of course she will have a watch and be running on time...)

Week 11, Extra Reading Diary,Welsh Fairy Book (Thomas)

Welsh Fairy Book (Thomas)

The Stray Cow

Cows in a lake found on www.colourbox.com
...the neighbourhood of the lake was haunted by a band of elfin ladies.
I had no idea that elves had animals, very interesting!
but no one was favoured with more than a passing glimpse till an old farmer ... had the good luck to catch one of the Gwartheg y Llyn, or kine of the lake, which had fallen in love with the cattle of his herd.
Well, I do believe we have found a lady of the lake, or a river goddess....
Never was there such a cow, never such calves, never such milk and butter and cheese...
Because the food is divine! I don't think the cow is actually a normal cow, but a deity, a sacred deity who may have shapeshifted? Hathor?
...a piercing cry awakened the echoes of the hills and made the welkin ring. The butcher's arm was paralysed ...
Very interesting magic here, with use of sound. Clearly this is one of the maidens of the lake if not the lady herself.
No sooner were these words uttered than the elfin cow and all her progeny to the third and fourth generation were in full flight towards the lake....
interesting spell
"Come thou, Einion's Yellow One,
Stray-horns, the Particoloured Lake Cow.
And the hornless Dodyn,
Arise, come home."
I have no idea what any of this means, I will have to do some looking....

he saw the elfin dame, with the cows and their calves formed in a circle round her, leisurely descending mid-lake. They disappeared...
are you kidding me? a herd of cows, just disappearing into the lake? I am going to have to say I think that the lake is a stargate portal. like lake Nemi that is sacred to the triple goddess Diana of the hunt, Diana's mirror.

Week 11, Reading Diary, Reading Diary B, King Arthur

Therewith he kneeled down before the table and made his prayers, and while he was praying, his soul suddenly left the body and was carried by angels up into heaven, which the two Knights right well beheld. Also they saw come from heaven a hand, but no body behind it, and it came unto the Vessel, and took it and the spear, and bare them back to heaven. And since then no man has dared to say that he has seen the Holy Graal.
This is the coolest thing that I found in this half of the unit. I love that a hand just pops out of nowhere and takes the Vessel and the spear and disappears. I feel some fairy magic about to happen!

Week 11, Reading Diary, Reading Diary A, King Arthur

Myth-Folklore Unit: King Arthur

THE PASSING OF MERLIN

  • Sir Pellinore, brought a damsel of the lake to Arthur's Court, and when Merlin saw her he fell in love with her, so that he desired to be always in her company....whom some call Nimue and others Vivien, and wherever she went, Merlin went also.
Okay cool, now we meet the immortal Lady of the Lake, the owner of Excalibur. She has the sword as it was returned to her upon the death of King Arthur. Nathan has been sent to retrieve the sword by his immortal soon to be wife Melusina. Nimue is Melusina's maternal grandmother. Melusina and her sister Melior have been magically trapped on a piece of property owned by the crusader family of Raymond of Toulouse, and Nathan is on an errand to find the sword in order to free Melusina.
  • The damsel laughed in secret at Merlin but made use of him to tell her all she would know, and the wizard had no strength to say her nay, though he knew what would come of it. For he told King Arthur that before long he should be put into the earth alive, for all his cunning.
Like Nathan, the seeker, the pure of heart, even the powerful Merlin is defenseless against the guiles of the women of the line of the lady of the lake. The river goddess woman are unstoppable when they decide on doing something.
  • put forth all her Powers and told Merlin how she longed to see the wonders beneath the stone, and, in spite of all his wisdom, Merlin listened to her and crept under the rock to bring forth the strange things that lay there. And when he was under the stone, she used the magic he had taught her, and the rock rolled over him and buried him alive, as he had told King Arthur....— now that she knew all the magic he could teach her.
I wonder if this is how Nathan and Melusina will wind up, after he passes the initiation and retrieves what Melusina is after. What exactly is it that she is after? Why do we need Excalibur? and what about the other swords, Joyeuse, and Cortana?

The Fall of Atlantis

Before the time of the Great Flood there was an epoch of time called Atlantis, like how there was a medieval period of time. The days of the Atlantean period were full of advanced technology and astounding architectural accomplishments. A time when the gods and angels walked the earth with man. Atlantis also became full of corruption and greed. The law of the land went from a state of balance of peace and abundance for all to a state of imbalance and the rule of a few over many. People during the declining times of Atlantis became slaves to the elite and were forced to work in unsafe conditions, worship false gods, be separated from their loved ones and go without food or pay. The people became unsettled and started a rebellion to try to bring them back to a state of balance.

The huge towers and monuments that had been built to honor the gods, like the great Tower of Babel, came under attack because the people were losing faith in the powers of the gods to protect them from the tyranny of the elite ruling class of Atlantis. One of the tallest towers became a tool to shoot weapons into the sky. The rebelling Atlanteans were aiming to reach the heavens, the abodes of the gods with their death rays and atomic weapons that their anger and hatred had built. To start a war with heaven.

As with most times when mortals go meddling in the affairs of the gods, things did not end well for the rebelling people of Atlantis. The gods of the heavens sent the angels who were immortals to handle the affairs of the mortal humans of earth when the declining of Atlantis began. The angels became attached to the mortals because of how beautiful the women were. The human women were like a sweet and forbidden fruit for the angels. The angels angered the gods with their choices and the gods cast them out of the heavens as a consequence to their behaviors. Basically, the gods in the heavens took the ability to time and space travel through portals away and the angels could not go back home. They became known as the fallen angels because they fell from grace of the gods when they mated with the women of earth. The time of Atlantis soon came to an end known to us as the Great Flood. The flood was a consequence to the rebelling humans of Atlantis that started the war with the Tower of Babel. Only a certain few lived through the event to tell the tales of the world-changing events of the war with heaven that caused the fall of Atlantis, the fall of the great Tower of Babel, the Great Flood of epic proportion. Mankind fled in diaspora to many parts of the earth to survive and start over again. The languages on earth became scrambled and people lost the ability to communicate with each other. They  also lost a great wealth of technology.

Some of the survivors of the fall of the tower and of Atlantis  cleverly disguised still live on today. They are known in certain circles as the Immortals. This handful of random survivors, the Immortals appear to live forever, while some others have been killed or have died. They all still have amazing magical powers and treasures. Today we know of their myths and legends as gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines. One of those Immortals that survived was a woman named Ninevethe Lady of the Lake. Her bloodline still exists today, and you have heard of  her most likely in legends of Merlin and King Arthur. Nineve survived the earth's changes and helped to build a new civilization on earth and pass on sacred knowledge like others of her time, such as Thoth the Scribe,  Melchizedek the Priest, Scatthach the Warrior, Parashuram the Avatar of Lord Vishnu and a handful of others.

Author's Note: I started this story not knowing where it would lead me. I love the old stories in the Bible, the ones that are so old they come from some other ancient culture. I think the Tower of Babel is a story that actually happened but happened during the time of Atlantis. The Bible also tells us about the fallen angels. The original stories found in the Unit for Noah told the stories from the books of Genesis in the Bible. I tried to keep the main idea of the fall of the Tower of Babel being the fall of Atlantis, when people were sent all over the earth and were unable to communicate for a while.

In my story The Fall of Atlantis, I chose to start the beginning of Nathan's story, a  Hero/Seeker character I have created to retell old stories. It is meant to be an introduction or backstory to the stories to come in the Portfolio I am creating.  Melusina is Nathan's wife who comes from one of those branches of the family tree of Nineve. She exists today in legends from medieval French and English tales of the Merovingian bloodlines. It is said that the royal bloodlines of the Merovingians  are cursed with the line of Melusina the mermaid, a water goddess, but she has lived since the times of Avalon, after the fall of Atlantis. Her story is tied to a Seeker named Nathan that wanders into the path of Melusina unknowingly during the late nineteenth century in France and becomes enchanted by her beauty and magic. Together they set off on an adventures to find treasures left behind by some Immortals, and to take treasure from those immortals who still live!
